Qqs Projects Society - supporting youth, culture and environment

Qqs Office & Koeye Café

Update: In July 2013, disaster struck in Bella Bella when a fire destroyed one of our main service buildings. The community lost its only grocery store and post office, and the office of Qqs Projects Society, including the Koeye Café and Thistalalh Memorial Library, was lost. We are in the process of reestablishing a space in the community from which to administrate our operations. We appreciate your patience and support in this time of transition.

For more information, please write Communications Director Jessie Housty.

Our offices and headquarters are located at the Koeye Café, which we run as a non-profit enterprise to facilitate community involvement, to promote Heiltsuk culture, and to employ local youth.

The café has long been a favourite gathering space for Bella Bella residents and visitors alike. We are proud to provide a comfortable and cozy community meeting place for people of all ages. In addition to great coffee and healthy snacks, you'll find a gift shop and a commission-free art gallery, as well as our library's reading room. Koeye Café is also where you'll find information and local advice for your explorations of our traditional territory. We even offer Wi-Fi internet access to our patrons.

At the office you'll find Larry Jorgenson, Qqs Projects founder and executive director, and his team working hard on a full plate of stewardship and community initiatives. Please don't hesitate to say hello. We're always happy to chat!

We are located in "downtown" Bella Bella, just down the hill from the Band Store on your way to the fuel dock (formerly the government wharf). If you're arriving by boat at the dock, just start walking up the hill and we're the first building on your right.

We are open weekdays from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.

For directions, see our Getting to Bella Bella page. Contact us for more information, or keep reading to learn more about what our office has to offer.

Coffee, Tea, and Snacks coffee_tea.jpg

Koeye Café is the place in Bella Bella to enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea. We offer fair-trade organic coffees such as Koeye River Java - our signature blend of dark roast coffee (available in both regular and decaf). We also sell this important commodity by the pound.

We have a variety of teas, from jasmine green, black oolong, to good old fashioned red Tetley, as well as a wide selection of caffeine-free herbal teas. We also serve a full range of espresso drinks, made possible by an espresso machine generously donated by one of our supporters. We also carry refreshing juices for those hot summer days and hot cocoa for those cold, rainy summer days.

In addition to our selection of healthy snacks, we offer sandwiches and homemade baked goods lovingly prepared daily by local Heiltsuk ladies. Koeye Café also offers coffee catering service. Call 250-957-2917 for more information!

We offer an assortment of locally made arts and crafts, various gift ware, trade beads, jewelry, greeting cards, chocolate, and much more!

All proceeds from gift shop sales go to supporting Qqs Projects Society.

Our selection of certified authentic trade beadsincludes Russian Blues, Vaseline Beads, Dogans, and Columbia River trading beads.

Koeye Café also serves as a commission-free gallery space for local artists and carvers. All the proceeds from these sales go directly back to the artists. Drop in to see our rotating selection of woven cedar and silver jewelry, as well as masks, carvings, paintings, and unique crafts.

Finally, you can witness our collection of Heiltsuk artifacts, such as stone tools, from ancient village sites across our traditional territory. We prefer that artifacts stay where they were deposited hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Nevertheless, some artifacts find their way to the café, where they are kept safe and become enduring symbols and reminders of the resourcefulness and ingenuity of our traditional way of life.

Bella Bella Visitor Centre

The Qqs Projects Society office at Koeye Café functions as the Bella Bella visitor centre.

Need directions? We appreciate that finding your way around in a small, remote First Nations community can be daunting to the uninitiated. Whether your trip is business or pleasure, we'll point you in the right direction.

Planning a trip on the Central Coast by private boat or kayak? Why not stop in for some local advice? Chances are, you'll find someone here who knows this territory like the back of their hand. Having a conversation about your trip with a friendly local is a great way to maximize your experience and learn how to avoid making any cultural faux-pas (or worse) while you're at it. You can also get tide information and see maps of the area.

To start, learn how to get to Bella Bella and check out our maps! Please feel free to contact us for more information.

Thistalalh Reading Room reading_room.jpg

Koeye Café is also the home of Thistalalh Memorial Library - Bella Bella's community library and family literacy initiative. Here you can browse our collection of over 3,000 titles from a wide variety of genres!

We are pleased to offer a comfortable, cozy and quiet atmosphere in which to relax with a hot drink and a good book. Meanwhile your kids can immerse themselves in our many children's books. And of course you are free to check out books to read at your leisure.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
