Camp Schedule - Summer 2011

Here are our Koeye Camp and Goose Island Camp dates and themes for summer 2011.

This year at Koeye we will be offering six 6-day camps for youth 8-15 years of age. These camps will focus on a variety of themes (outlined below) and will be run with the support of a number of partners and resource people.

June 28 - July 1 - staff leadership training.

July 4 - 9 - Honour Camp will give youth a chance to reconnect with the ancestral energy that is so present in Koeye. We’ll focus on medicine gathering, wellness, cultural strength, and activities like burning food and blankets to take care of our loved ones who have passed.

July 11 - 16 - Biodiversity Camp is sponsored by the Hakai Network for Coastal People, Ecosystems and Management. Resource people from the Network will participate in camp and lead activities that raise awareness about the ecological richness of the Koeye River Watershed.

July 18 - 23 - Ancestor Camp will be our cultural immersion camp; we plan to focus on cedar bark weaving, Heiltsuk language, traditional food and medicine harvests, and our cultural program in Dhadhixsistala (our bighouse).

July 25 - 30 - What's at Stake? Camp is run in partnership with Raincoast Conservation Foundation. Raincoast resource people will bring their research vessel, the sailboat Achiever, to Koeye, and through a marine-focused program will build on the momentum of our young leaders around issues like oil tanker traffic and the Enbridge Northern Gateway project.

August 1 - 6 - Salmon Camp will focus on salmon as a keystone species in Koeye, where all species spawn in our river. Campers will enjoy salmon feasts as they learn about the important role of salmon in the Koeye ecosystem.

August 8 - 13 - Baxvala Camp is built around the theme of traditional harvests, where campers will gather traditional foods and medicines as they learn about how our lands and waters still sustain our traditional way of life.

We will accept applications for camper enrolment into the summer. Please contact us as soon as possible if you are interested in signing your child up for one of our camps.

As always we will combine a strong cultural foundation with a good mix of western and traditional science to strengthen, motivate, and awe our young people as we help them to find their place in our community and in our natural world.

If you are able to support us either financially or in person we welcome your participation. Please contact us with any questions!
