We take a long term view of our commitment to our camp participants. Many campers return to Koeye to become leaders in various camp staff positions. This is one way in which Qqs is building the capacity to create new leaders in the greater Heiltsuk community.
We always strive to hire Heiltsuk students and we require all staff be enrolled in full-time academic studies during the school year. We also encourage staff to invest in themselves by obtaining additional qualifications and certifications, such as First Aid training and bronze medallion swimming certification, during the off-season.
These policies have led to a significant number of our staff graduating from university and returning home to work with their community.
In 2011 the Koeye Camp program will be co-directed by Rory Housty and Jayda Wilson, two young Heiltsuk leaders who have accepted the challenge of pushing our camp program in new and exciting directions.
| Rory Housty is a young Heiltsuk cultural leader and a student of Anthropology at Vancouver Island University. He is returning for his third season as co-director at camp, and brings strength to both western and traditional aspects of our integrative youth program. | |
| Jayda Wilson is a bright young Heiltsuk woman who is starting a new educational path in Marine Biology at the University of British Columbia. Though this is her first season working with the camp program, she brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to Koeye! |
They will be supported by a staff of junior and senior leaders and interns - keep your eye on our blog for staff announcements!
